The effect of vaginal cleansing performed with normal saline solution or povidone-iodine before elective caesarean section on postoperative maternal morbidity and infection; A prospective randomized controlled study

Objective: The present study was designed to determine the effect of vaginal cleansing performed with saline solution or povidoneiodine before elective cesarean section on postpartum maternal morbidity and postoperative infection. Patients Methods: One hundred eighty primiparae, awaiting caesarean section, were assigned into following three groups, Group1 (saline for 30s, n:60); Group2 (povidone-iodine Group3 (control group, n:60). Results: There statistically significant differences between 3 groups in terms median values C-reactive protein (CRP) fever, visual analogue scale (VAS) score (p<0.001). value CRP level 26.5 mg/dl, 59.5mg/dl 62.3mg/dl solution, povidone-iodine control respectively. VAS 3,4 4; incidence patients fever >38°C 1.7%, 3.4% 10% Conclusion: Vaginal normal significantly reduced pain, levels. Cleansing vagina clinically number postcaesarean wound site infections, endometritis; however, reduction not significant.
